Durbanville Schools Foundation: Teacher Progress - Term 3 Support Visits

In Term 3, we conducted our third round of support visits to the 19 project teachers across four DSF schools. Earlier in June, we held a refresher seminar to help teachers consolidate their learning and strengthen their practical implementation of the Basic Concepts Programme (BCP).

The teachers are now in their second year of implementing the BCP, with a strong focus on translating training into classroom practice.

A key takeaway across all schools is the growing emphasis on language development. Teachers are encouraging learners to speak in full sentences, use descriptive vocabulary, and explain their thinking—laying a strong foundation for cognitive and academic growth.

While full BCP sessions are not always feasible, many teachers are integrating core concepts into daily routines like morning ring, story time, and small group activities. Despite challenges like time constraints and large class sizes, teachers are finding creative ways to engage learners using the programme’s tools.

Notably, even partial implementation is having a positive impact: learners are more confident, using richer language, and showing early literacy gains.

Our focus remains on practical support, building teacher confidence, and ensuring every child has the opportunity to learn, think, and thrive.
