Bridges of Learning Brings Teachers Together to Strengthen Classroom Practice (Session 1)
Part of the Project
The Bridges of Learning Project has brought together twelve teachers from a range of school communities for ongoing professional development and collaboration. With two of the seven training sessions now completed, the programme provides a space for educators working in different educational contexts to share experiences while deepening their understanding of the Basic Concepts Programme and the materials used to support learners’ cognitive and language development.
During the training, teachers explored the concept of mediation and how it can be used to guide learners’ thinking more effectively. A key focus was learning how to mediate the higher-order concept of “Colour”, helping children move beyond simple recognition toward deeper conceptual understanding. Participants observed a live demonstration and then engaged in hands-on activities, including practising mediated lessons with one another, giving teachers an opportunity to apply the strategies in a supportive environment.
One of the most meaningful moments of the programme so far emerged during a discussion about the different contexts in which teachers work. Participants reflected on similarities and differences between their schools and discovered that, regardless of whether classrooms are large or small, or whether learners come from affluent or disadvantaged backgrounds, all children present both simple and complex learning needs. The conversation also created space for teachers to share some of the challenges they face in schools, as well as the aspects of teaching they love most—reminding everyone involved of the shared purpose that brought them to the profession.
